Richard Fortin of RFP Media, Shannon Falconi of Global Groove, & Dermot Wilson & the team at NRCC organized the 5th installment of Art Jam here in North Bay.  It was a diverse show, full of art, poetry, music, & more.  I was happy to be a part & created a participatory portrait project called ‘Vision Quest’.

I asked people to write on a range of topics:
Love, community, equality, peace, happiness, respect, justice.

The title came from the idea that I would only include the eyes of the subjects I photographed, and combine it with their words.  It was a huge success!  I love all the diverse answers that came from this.  I hope you enjoy their vision.

Peace – calm within oneself and the (futile?) search for the same calm within the world.
Love – waking up next to my heart.
Equality – seeing someone as unique and different, but with the same inherent rights and dignity.

Be the peace you want to see. Peace is an act.

We are more than our occupation, we are not defined by our weakness’. We are all human.

Community – inclusive and compassionate.
A place where we lift one another up.
Creative, just and true.

Happiness –
What is the cost of happiness? What is happening beyond the perfect moment, the perfect place.

Sometimes, we’re not okay. I try to remember to forgive myself for that.
It’s okay not to be okay.
Okay will come again, but you have to wait if you want to see it.

Respect: the tool
Community: the vessel
Justice + Equality: the rules
Happiness + Love: the reward

Happiness: A gift that can be shared and carried to and with others.
Live for it!

Love – As others have said “the eyes are the windows to the soul” and the soul is love. Pure love in its highest form.
When we acknowledge each other in a soulful way, love radiates, unites, and heals.

Community
A sense of closeness and connection amongst people who support each other, encourage each other that ultimately creates a better world.

Respect: I want to be a voice for people who can’t have one.
Community: I really feel that my journey includes bringing people together.

Peace – so elusive – or is it really? Isn’t it innate? it lives in all of us.
Peace be with you, with us ALL.

Love is…..
Knowing the multitude of someone’s being.
And still you dive in.

Love yourself

Community – choose to immerse yourself in the people who choose to be around you, and reach for a common goal to unite yourselves.

Love
I am convinced that 90% of what we call love today is actually lust. Example: Love (lust) at first sight. You can’t control who you love (lust).
True love is disciplined and self-sacrificial. Lust is unrestrained and self-indulgent.

Community
You’re only as strong as your community

Life above all. A fragility where we act as stewards. Within the diversity we stand humbled.

Happiness is a field of llamas

This is respect to me: respect is like treating people how you want to be treated or being nice, eg. playing on your phone while at a funeral – no respect. Being sad and caring at a funeral – respectful.

Love – being there for someone no matter what, never expecting anything in return.

Happiness – being in nature where you don’t feel the need to conform to society

Community
To know that there are others in the world who understand you, who share a bond with you made of common experience and shared feelings and memories – even if you have never met before – it is so important. To be different from everyone around you is very isolating. To feel alone in the world, no matter how many people are around you, is so painful.
At its heart, that is what culture is – community. It is what we have in common what we share with each other. Community is what makes us feel connected, like we are a part of the world, like we belong.
